The program was developed to expand horizons and increase the attractiveness in the labor market of professionals between 18 and 35 years old in situations of economic and social vulnerability.
Since 2021, the project has directly impacted 5,000 talents indicated by partner NGOs and univesities, considering pre-defined criteria: age, location, family income, diversity, initial language level, education level, availability, internet access, and motivation. The applications received are analyzed with great attention and care by a team from Instituto Lingopass dedicated to the project.
We chose this target audience for two reasons:
1) According to a recent IBGE survey, unemployment in Brazil has reached 14 million workers. Almost 30% of the total number of people looking for a job is made up of young people between 18 and 24 years old. In the general population, the unemployment rate is 14.3%. The lack of qualifications and experience makes young people the ones who suffer most from the reduction in the number of vacancies in the job market.
Mastering the English language, as a sign of investment in one's career, is capable of highlighting the professional resume in the job market and increasing the candidates' value. According to the 57th Catho online Salary Survey, in 2020 the average difference between interns/trainees/apprentices who speak English fluently to those who do not was around 40%.
2) As an aggravating factor, young people are more vulnerable to serious emotional problems due to situations and experiences that cause suffering, such as social isolation. The quarantine changed everyone's routine, but had greater impacts on the psychological state of this social group, affected by unemployment and with an uncertain professional horizon: difficulties to adapt to the confinement, insomnia, irritability, anxiety crises, and a tendency to develop depressive episodes.
Learning a new language, besides increasing the employability and income of the youngster, also raises his or her self-esteem, brings new skills, and activates brain functions that enable decision making in an alternative way, more creative solutions, and an enriched cultural experience . In addition, it increases the possibility of connecting and networking with people and organizations. In short, it is a real antidote to unemployment and depression!
